a Popular Information app

Who paid for this?

Political mail is the darkest corner of American political advertising. It can be micro-targeted and receives almost no media attention. This tool gives you immediate, unprecedented insight into who is sending you mail.

It's simple. Photograph your mail. If your material involves a federal race, the app will immediately give you detailed information about who is paying for it. For state and local races, a Popular Information journalist will review your submission.

This helps us correctly identify the mailer. It will never be published or shared.

  • Make sure the "Paid for by" fine print is readable.
  • Also works for TV and online ads: pause on the last frame with the "Paid for by" line and take a photo or screenshot.
  • Cover your address if you like. If you don't, we cover it before we show a mailer in our reporting.

Mailer: photograph the front, then the back. TV or online ad: one photo or screenshot is enough.

Or drag photos or screenshots onto this page.

We promise we will never publish your name, email, ZIP code or address. You can cover over this information before taking the photo. We may publish newsworthy mailers in the Popular Information newsletter. If we do, we will block out any personally identifying information.
